Find the link to the picture, and then click the "img" button, type the link to the picture, and click "Img" again...

Currently you must upload it to a server, and use "link to offsite avatar"

No, actually it means most of you just don't have access to a site where you can upload your own avatars.

Of course, if it's just some image you find somewhere else on the internet you can follow the previously mentioned steps and pop that into the "offsite url" in the profile.
