On March 12th, 1926. The savoy Ballroom opened in Harlem New York between 140th and 141st streets on Lennox Avenue. The Savoy was a popular dance venue from the late 1920s to the 1950s and many dances such as Lindy Hop became famous here. It was known downtown as the "Home of Happy Feet" but uptown, in Harlem, as "the Track".The Savoy Ballroom, was house to some of the greatest Swing Jazz musicians, Chick Webb,Count Basie, Benny Goodman, and many others.
We at Harlem Shout, in an effort to preserve and introduce to a wider audience, the love and appreciation for one of America's original musical art forms Jazz, will be holding a grand opening dance at Ballroom Utah Dance studio This dance will be called " Savoy Swing Nights" and it will be a tribute to the Savoy Ballroom glory years.
We have found one of the best dance floors in Utah, and are combining that with two of the best Swing Dj's and some of the best dancers in the country YOU! On Friday july 23rd will mark the stellar grand opening of a spectacular night of dancing "Savoy Swing Nights" That's right! a Swing dancing venue put together by dancers, for dancers. 4 hours of jumpin' swing music, on a fully air conditioned, 3000 sq. foot brazilian cherrywood sprung dance floor.
This is a night we can all get dolled up and dressed to the 9's for, get in your closet and pull out those vintage outfits you know you are dying to wear, and be part of the Vintage Fashion show contest. bring your friends along and enter the Savoy Freestyle Throwdown, or come solo and be the king or Queen of the Jitterbugs in the Jack and Jill contest. This will be a night you won't want to miss
A "best dressed" code will be enforced for this event. Although not necessary,vintage dress is strongly encouraged. No shorts, Ripped jeans or T-shirts will be allowed

Provided by two of Utah's best Swing Jazz Dj's, Ron and Sage. They will be playing some of the best Swing Jazz music of the 30's and 40's, that will keep the floor Jumpin. Expect everything from upbeat high energy jazz, to some of the best Trad-blues and everything in between that was popular in Uptown Harlem.
Contest Details
Vintage Dressed Fashion Show
Audience judged contest. Contestants will stroll on the dance floor one at a time
King or Queen of The Jitterbugs Jack and Jill Contest
This contest will be done in heats, with partners switching off every song. There will be a maximum of 5 songs per heat of varied tempos. with 3 couples in the final round, danced in a phrase battle with an all skate at the end
Savoy Freestyle Throwdown
MInimum 3 people per team, Maximum of 6
This is a freestyle competition in which individuals will for a team of 3-6 people. A maximum of only 3 teams will be allowed to participate at one time. with only 2 teams in the final contest.
Competitors will dance to a maximum of 5 songs of varied tempos. Each team will send out 1-6 of their team members, to dance solo or in a variety of group formations for 1/2 a chorus (16 8's). The song will continue until all teams have sent out their team members out at least once or when the judges see fit to change the song.
In the final round the two remaining teams will be given 1 full chorus (32 8's) each, to spotlight their skills. This will continue until the judges see fit to change the song or stop the contest.
All contests will be Judged by three judges as well as some audience participation. Contestants will be judged on musicality, showmanship, and improvisation.
