Thanks for reading!
Blue Interlude, a jazz combo associated with the world renowned Crescent Jazz Institute and Crescent Super Band is available for hire in the Salt Lake area. We play any length of set that is required and any style you need, though straight ahead jazz is always a favorite with the audiences. Pm me if you are interested! Thanks,
-Derek Crane, Blue Interlude

Now I wonder what you mean by "straight ahead jazz".

I think it's safe to say even from here that our folks will be most interested in the style and content of the thirties and forties. You know. Like swing music.

Hey, and who's in charge of music for ULX this year?

Well more standard styles that stick to the swing rhythm introduced wa back when. We do less funk charts, free jazz, or smooth jazz than a lot of groups, though we have all the music to do so. We enjoy charts like "It Don't Mean a Thing", " Don't Get Around Much Anymore", "Cottontail by Duke Ellington" and many other versions based off old Ella Fitzgerald, Duke, Basie, Young, and Webster recordings. Our All state vocalist, guitarist and reedman, as well our 1st place state percussionist are more than qualified to play any style you wish.

Do we have a standard set of guidelines for bands about playing in a more danceable fashion? Things like:

Average song lengths of less than 4.5 minutes
few solos that exceed 16 bars (shorter for drum solos)
No waltz, cha-cha and other unrelated music at a swing dance

others?

I suggest you look into talking with band leaders like Mora( from moras modern rhytmists) Jonathan Stout (Jonathan stout and his orchestra) and Glen Crytzer ( Crytzer's Syncopators) they are modern bands that play great swing jazz from the glory years of swing 1935-1943

Mora's first name is Dean, incidentally.

Are you suggesting that to SpecK, or ZapS?

How well do you suppose Solomon Douglas or Tad Calcara would be able to answer the question?

Or Bob Bailey?
