So for a long time now, the USU Big Band Swing Club had needed a new sound....With it's equipment that is. The out dated , scratchy, bigger than all of us speakers, are very nearly reaching the end of their lives! This was a problem that has been tolerated for some time due to funds and things, but now it it is time. The sign of the Apocalypse for our speakers has passed, the handle on one of the speakers is broken maiking it twice as hard to carry as before, adn well, to be honest , we are a follow heavy scene and thoguh we are strong women who can manage, the speakers are bigger than most of us!

So it is obvious we need new equipment. But we have no idea what's good what should be purchased, we need some tech knowledge we jsut don't have. I knwo we need soem speakers, adn a sound board thingy, but to be honest, i am nt een sure wha tall of that does! So if any one cna help, it would be very appreciate. i am really jsut worried about the knowlegde of what is good. Funds, at present are not improtant. I know that we can reach any moentary goal with enough elbow grease. But what we really need is information.

Thanks!

aaah, we should have an official retirement of that system ::sigh:: we focused all of our fund-raising energy during the first year of the club on saving up for that thing. paul coulam bought it during the second year. i had dreams though of having a set up complete with dual-CD players, like BYU's, before the advent of MP3 players. Combine that system (back when it actually worked) with dual mp3 players and of course audio-inputs for the laptop users, and you'd have a great starting point.

how to choose the right amp and speakers is a GRAND question. be sure to consider the variety of spaces this system has to fill -- indoor and outdoor, large spaces like echo-y Elite Hall and small.

truth be told, my dream set up would include dual record players able to play 78s, 45s, and 33 1/3s ::double sigh::

oh and you need some good headphones to cue with. i'm so tired of djing with little earbuds. that reminds me! UofU has a pretty nice set up right now! we should ask them about it =)

I thought record players were fairly fragile and they would only help hard core folks like roach or tommy(who's gone and has his own turntables).

The U has a pair of fairly standard speakers/monitors. They are still large and heavy, but have rugged plastic boxes that are a little more robust than some older style speaker boxes.

I would go with a mixer that has cd and ipod capabilities. You never know what your gueset djs may use and that way you will be able to work with them. As for speakers I would go to a music store and ask around or read reviews online.
