Hey, so for Christmas I got (among other things) a $15 iTunes gift card. Naturally it's going to go towards something to swing to-- my jazz collection is woefully deficient. (And Ukrainian rock music just doesn't fit, you know?) I could just pick out songs I like until I get to 15, but it looks like you get about twice as much music (give or take) if you buy it by the album.
Naturally I will spend more time than perhaps strictly necessary goofing off on the computer and listening to 30-second samples before I make my final decision, but before I do:
What albums especially deserve a look? Can you think of any albums that have more awesome on them than any album has a right to have? Albums that you love until they turn real, like the velveteen rabbit? Albums that you're sure you would love, but don't actually have? Albums that you were totally about to buy me for Christmas yourself, but didn't (for whatever reason)? _________________ Um... light brown? |

Go, Daddy-O!
But you get minus points for neither album actually being on iTunes. _________________ Um... light brown? |

Very cereal. If you don't have those albums you probably don't even say "Go Daddy-O" on the dancefloor! |

The songs that I recognize *do* sound good. That's another one that apple won't sell me for love or money, though, so I'll just have to keep it in mind abstractly. _________________ Um... light brown? |

Just picked up an album by Little Walter, and another one by Sonny Boy Williamson II.
And since the thread was still here, I figured I'd say so. _________________ Um... light brown? |

As someone who actually likes Neo-Swing &/or Pop-Swing:
to the rest of you!
Alien Fashion Show---Alien Fashion Show
All Aboard!---Indigo Swing
Americana Delux---Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
The Dirty Boogie---The Brian Setzer Orchestra
Everybody's Talkin' 'Bout Miss Thing!---Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers
Four Chords and Several Years Ago---Huey Lewis & the News
Indigo Swing---Indigo Swing
Michael Bublé---Michael Bublé
Red Light!---Indigo Swing
Rock Swings---Paul Anka
Sinatra Reprise: The Very Good Years---Frank Sinatra
Swing Kids: Movie Soundtrack
Swingin' Away---George Gee and His Make-Believe Ballroom Orchestra
Swizzle: Smooth Tunes on the Rocks---Tony Paglia
This Beautiful Life---Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
This One's from the Heart---James Darren
Practically no one's ever heard of Tony Paglia or James Darren, but they are sooooooo awesome...
My big thing is variety. If you prefer any particular "sub-genre" of Swing over another, or ever over all others, that's fine. But please, please for the love of everything holy, play a variety of music! No matter how much I like a style, it gets old if that's all I hear during a night of dancing.
So yeah, play Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Prima, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, etc.---they're all great. But don't discount Neo-Swing &/or Pop-Swing _________________ "If you don't dance, you're wasting your feet!"
