I'm really psyched to be coming to SLC. I haven't been there since Tall Nick & JonJon were around...
If you're wondering what brings me to town, it's cheap Southwest fares. I asked Bryson if I could teach a free/donation-based weeknight blues workshop, and it seems that enough of you are interested to make it happen.
As far as topics... Some of the things that I'm working on myself, which I'd love to share but haven't fully mastered, are vintage blues, muscular energy, solo blues, rhythm & balance. Other topics, that I am better known for and teach a lot more, are connection & partnering, creativity, contrast (i.e. creativity inside the box), tango fusion and moving your body without shame.
Obviously, 2-3 hours is not a whole lot of time to get into everything, so please let me know what sounds good (and what doesn't). |

considering how most dancers out here haven't had that much exposure to good blues dancing, basics is probably best. of course, it really depends on who comes to the workshop. if we get a majority of experienced blues dancers, then i'm totally game for some more advanced concepts.
yay for blues!

We have a lot of interested dancers up here in Logan, but most of them are newbies. I'll try to find out how many people are really interested and find out what they want. _________________

Awesome, you all are so sweet! I will make sure that we announce it. Keep us posted on specifics so that we can tell our club members what to expect. _________________

The time of the worshop will have to be after 8pm because there are other classes there until then. If you want it earlier in the day we may have to look somewhere else. But if it's ok to have it later then the Skillet would love to host this event. _________________ Live your Dreams |

just an idea, but can we still get studio 600 if we want it earlier? there's lots of space there. |

Buzz and I are coming. I could definitely use some help with rhythm, balance and muscular energy. As for vintage blues and solo blues, I don't even know what they are - shows how much I know. |

this brings up a good point. perhaps i should have phrased my earlier post into a more clear inquiry.
there is stuff i teach all the time - connection, contrast, creativity. i'm real comfortable and slightly bored with it, but it's still really good.
there is other stuff i'm currently working on - rhythm, balance and muscular energy. i've improved it in my own dancing, but i'm not yet where i want to be, and i don't have as much experience teaching it. this is also what i'm most excited about teaching, even though i'm not as confident. i would, of course, spend a good amount of time preparing for it.
since my primary goal is to be of service to your community, my question is, which would (each of) you rather get? or is there an opportunity for both? the latter might be especially fun and useful as part of an intermediate/advanced class (perhaps wednesday?), which i could structure as a less teacher-driven and more student-centered class.
thank you in advance for your feedback...
mihai =) |

Weave historical and cultural context into the lesson and I'll be more than excited. Really, all the topics you've mentioned sound thrilling. If Bryson recommends you as a teacher/dancer/friend, I'm down.
(I'm just hoping my internship & final schedule allows for my attendance both nights.) |

Sounds like a lot of fun.
If I could offer my two cents (which has already been established isn't worth that much, but here it goes anyway) I would suggest NOT offering the basics. Why? Well, there have been about 3-4 basic blues workshops within the past year or two and it never seems to generate that much interest. A few new people come but that's about it. And the people who want to work on more intermediate/advanced concepts begin to get bored. (Don't get me wrong, I understand the importance of the basic and all)
Rythm, balance, muscular energy would be great. I also wouldn't mind a off-the wall topic like "Fun things to do with your feet" or "Forehead connections - SWEEEET." or something like that, just to really mix things up. |
